According to the Food and Drug Administration, they had added a warning on Wednesday about the risk associated with the drug alli. This particular drug is generally marketed and sold over-the-counter by pharmaceutical giants- GlaxoSmithKline. Similar warnings have also been issued for the prescription version of Xenical, which is manufactured as well as marketed by Roche.
The Food and Drug Administration until now has identified 13 cases of liver damage due to the usage of this drug. However, there has been no specific reason, which proves the side effects of weight loss drugs due to the usage of these drugs.
The FDA in order to find results asked doctors and their patients to look out for signals of liver injury such as yellow eyes and skin, itching, and loss in one’s appetite.
However, Glaxo released a statement which specified that the company was extremely committed to ensure the safety of consumers as well as the doctors prescribing their drug. According to figures, almost 10 million people all over the world have used alli since its launch.
Roche on the other hand mentioned that the safety of Xenical has been used, proved and tested in the last 10 years and more than 36 million people stand as its prove. According to their claim, nearly 36 million people have used their product Xenical and have not faced any such problem.
The FDA first approved alli in 2007 and Xenical in 1999.
The sales of alli last year had been outstanding, the drug alone contributed to sales of $293 million in the United States itself. However, experts predicted during the launch of the drug in 2007 that the sales would be far more higher. Though the amount of sale has never been worrying; however, analysts believe that side effects of the drug like anal leakage as well as lower consumer spending has lowered the sales of the drug alli.
